Virtual Gathering Brings Children Across the Island of Ireland Together for Autism Awareness

Around 50 children from across the island of Ireland participated in a special virtual evening hangout organised by the Irish Mission Children’s Ministry on April 2. The event, titled “Kids Connect,” was led by Children’s Ministry Sponsor Neidi Moh and took place via Zoom.

The gathering provided an opportunity for children to connect, celebrate, and learn how to better embrace and support children with autism and special needs within their church family.

April 2 marks World Autism Awareness Day, and Neidi thoughtfully used the occasion to create a programme that was both engaging and impactful for the young participants. One of the highlights of the evening was the use of a puppet character representing a non-verbal autistic girl. Through this creative approach, Neidi helped the children understand how to treat others with kindness, patience,

and respect.

The puppet illustration offered practical examples of situations that might be overwhelming or upsetting for someone with autism, guiding the children to reflect on how their words and actions can make a positive difference. This interactive method proved to be an effective and memorable way to introduce the topic of autism and celebrate the uniqueness of every individual.

In addition to this, the programme included games that actively engaged the children, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The participants were enthusiastic, eager to share their thoughts, and fully involved throughout the session.

Another important aspect of the meeting focused on emotions, helping children understand their feelings and learn healthy ways to manage them. This discussion added further value to the event, equipping the children with tools that are essential for their personal and social development.

“Kids Connect” was a meaningful initiative that not only brought children together but also nurtured empathy, inclusion, and emotional awareness, values that are at the heart of a loving church community.
