Adventist Church in Waterford holds a special service for the children

A complete Sabbath service led by the children. That was what happened on the 1st of October 2022, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Waterford. The theme was “Chosen by God” and all the children from Waterford church took part in the different moments of the program. Songs, children’s story, worship and preaching was all conducted by them.

Katherina Naresh, church coordinator at Waterford church, explains that all the parents wanted to do something for the kids, so after a lot of searching, thinking and praying, the idea of this special Children’s Sabbath came up. According to her, the program was ready since July. “I wanted everybody to know in advance about the program so that they could prepare at home”, she explains.

13 year old Kathy Praise practiced a lot at home for the special songs and the children’s story. She got objects to illustrate the story, in which she focused on how people use their time, and the importance of setting a time aside for God. “The children’s Sabbath was a success. It was such a blessing to be here, so nice to participate”, says Kathy.

Melvin Spergeon also joined the kids in the songs but his greater challenge was to prepare part of the sermon for the service. He spoke about Moses and how God chose him for a special mission.

“I had some difficulties in the preparation, was also a bit nervous but I did it at the end and I have more confidence now to speak on stage”, he says. When asked if he would do it again, he promptly answers. “Of course I will”, says Melvin with a smile on his face.

And talking about smiles on the face, there were plenty of them on the parent's faces. They were really glad to see their children participating. “My family and I really enjoyed this special Children’s Sabbath. It was great to see our son Ravi and all the other children praising and worshiping God”, rejoices Ubirajara Tavares. Katherina was really happy that Waterford church could have this special Children’s Sabbath. She thanked the parents for their involvement and help. “I really appreciate all the parents who took those efforts to train up their children and bring them to church. If they weren’t there I don’t think this would have happened”, reflects Katherina.

Petar Popivanov, Irish Mission Children’s Sponsor, was visiting Waterford church for the first time and was pleasantly surprised to see the involvement of the children in the whole program. He also encourages other churches to involve their children more in the service. “Trust your kids, they can successfully lead the divine service, with guidance and support by you. Let them express themselves the way God speaks to them and God reveals himself in their lives in their own generation”, concludes Peter.
